It Takes a Child to Raise a Village: International Assembly New York Delegation

Fourth World has the longest history in New York out of all the American delegations, and the New York delegates will present an inspiring portrait of the ongoing impact of Street Libraries and the Tapori network as children mature. A group of young teenagers who have aged out of being read to at Street Libraries have started taking leadership roles, speaking out about what made the program important to them and getting trained on how to participate in running a Street Library. There is also a generation of young people, older than the “tween” group, who grew up in Tapori and Street Libraries and have formed the Youth Voices Workshop, in which they give their input on the impact of Fourth World on their lives, and help set the direction for Tapori and Street Libraries throughout the US. Finally, the Street Libraries have been a springboard for adult involvement as well, and they will share their strong tradition of gathering in diversity and mutual respect to make partnerships between people with firsthand experience living in poverty, academics, policymakers, and UN officials.
