The Fourth World Movement has been working with families in New Orleans from 1990. Since moving to our new home in the 7th Ward, our current projects include Street Libraries, the Young Leaders program, Doorstep Libraries and the Summer Festival of Learning. Our expanded facilities now include a large yard, a multi-purpose hall and access to a community garden, where children from the Street Library learn to grow everything from beets to bananas. Collaboration with other organizations and a network of members help us support families in accessing their basic human rights to housing, juvenile justice, education, and health care. New Orleans members have created special forums for reflection on, and promotion of founder Joseph Wresinski’s work. 2012 also sees the launch and tour of the book “Not Meant To Live Like This: Weathering the Storm of Our Lives in New Orleans”, a collection of testimonies from 50 co-authors about their lives in New Orleans before and after hurricane Katrina. The book has been designed to act as a launch pad for continuing discussion, workshops and community organizing events.
