Local community workers in Dickenson County, VA, an isolated, under-resourced coal mining area, invited our Volunteer Corps members in 1995. Since then, they have worked to learn from, support, and promote existing community development efforts. This partnership has led to times of service, training, and exchange for several Fourth World Volunteers from different countries. It has also spurred the development of computer classes, children’s after school activities, and the new Appalachian Learning Cooperative.
